Another thing to keep in mind is that if you do have a problem with your student loans, you need to apply for a deferment as soon as possible. Student loan debt carries a lot of weight on your credit report. If you screw up a student debt consolidation loan, it’s going to make a big dent on your credit report.
Now, ideally, you won’t be borrowing much more money for anything anyway since you’re in over your head paying for your education anyway, but it’s good to know that if you’re going to miss a payment you’re better off missing something else, and not that student loan.

Here’s the deal. Once you sign on the dotted line for a student loan, there’s no running away from it. Part of agreeing to take a federally subsidized student loan is agreeing that you can never get rid of it, except to retire the debt itself. And that’s really the way it should be, right?
There is some relief to be had from making a payment mistake resulting from having too many different student loan accounts, and that’s a debt consolidation loan. This financial vehicle will in effect pay off all your other accounts, and allow you to make one payment at one rate to one bank. It can greatly simplify your life, and as long as you don’t extend your payments or take a high interest rate it’s not a bad idea.

One of the options that college graduates have is to take all their separate student loans and roll them into a single account, thus consolidating their payments and hopefully negotiating some interest rate reductions on their non-subsidized loans.
And while I would hope that most people wouldn’t even consider bankruptcy before they even try to pay off a debt, it is possible that people will get student loans with the intent of not getting a job after graduation in hopes of filing for bankruptcy and getting a “free” education. Read this first: it’s not possible! The only way to get rid of student loans is to pay them. They will follow you forever.

It Takes Money to Make Money

It’s an interesting cycle, the concept of borrowing money to get an education with the hopes of making more money, in part to pay off the money you borrowed to get the education. But it’s not just that, it’s also expanding your horizons and improving the quality of life, or at least your understanding of grander things.

All this doesn’t seem to deter most people who want to go on to higher education, though, and the student loan industry flourishes because of it. Too, a follow on industry that benefits from the student loan machine is the student loan consolidation industry. The sad fact, especially in today’s job market, is that college grads generally don’t make what they had hoped they would, and they have a huge student loan payment on top of that. It’s not easy.
